I first heard about Monga awhile back, and basically forgot about it for a while. However it was recently released on Taiwan, so it's back on my radar.

Monga stars Ethan Ruan, Mark Zhao, and Rhydian Vaughan. The story takes place in the 1980's, and is about a group of boys who join a gang. (Review here)

Now, it's a gangster film, action and everything. But I'm not interested in that. I'm interested in the history there. The film is set in Wanhua, which is a district of Taipei. Wanhua is a place full of contrasts to me. On one hand you've got Ximending. Ximending is "the Harajuku of Taipei", a place where youth culture is rampant. Everything in Ximending proper is shiny, new, and marketable. On the other hand, in Wanhua you've got Longshan and the surrounding areas. The area around Longshan is quite interesting. It's old, building are built on top of buildings there. It's also full of old people, who are often found just randomly sitting on the sidewalks. This area also used to be the red light district, and there's still a lot of seediness around. When we first went to Taiwan, Wanhua was one of the first places we went, and it's one of my more enduring memories of Taiwan.

Now, since the movie is set in the 80's, towards the end of the KMT martial law period. So at this time, Taiwan was finally able to become something, and the people had more freedom. I'm looking forward to seeing how that translates into film.

Also: Ethan Ruan. I LOOOVE Ethan Ruan. He, of course, does dramas well, but I love when he plays against type in movies (see: Exit No. 6). Also the pseudo-gay stuff between Ethan and Mark that the Taiwanese media has been kicking up is intriguing, to say the least. I'm not a huge fan of Mark Zhao, but I do enjoy some random hot boy skinship as much as the next person ;D

Note of awesome: I recognize places in the trailer. Places I've totally been. OMG that reminds me! When I was staying in Wanhua last August, they were totally filming something. I wonder if it was this movie!!!!!

(OMG people, I HATE allergies! I cannot adequately describe how miserable I am. It must be a new allergy, but who knows what to... I need some damn Benadryl, and possibly some calamine lotion)

I decided to follow the rest of my peeps, and do my top 12 drama boyfriend list.

In response to [livejournal.com profile] cranberrysheep's Drama Boyfriend Playoffs, I listed my top 12 (well, technically it was 13, but who's counting) ideal drama boyfriends. And then [livejournal.com profile] ambergold and [livejournal.com profile] princess_dexter made more detailed posts, and well, I decided to as well!

And because I wanted pictures (and since a lot of my choices are from dramas I watched ages ago, when I didn't know how to screencap) I didn't have any ready to use caps, so I spent awhile going through my big ol' folder of drama discs. But this also meant I spent awhile rewatching my favorite parts of various dramas. But I'll get to that later.

Amusingly about half are from twdramas. Apparently I still love me some Taiwanese men after all ;P. Oddly, a lot of my choices are from unpopular dramas as well. And I totally have actor repeat offenders (three of them, actually!)

Anyway, list! (Note, the frst 5 aren't really in any concrete order. I love them all too much to choose between them)

Ah, this episode brought the return of the amazing, kickass, wonderful Wu Shuang. It also featured a lot less Yun Hao, which is a good thing.

I love Wu Shuang SO MUCH. I'm thinking of changing my Mandarin name to something similar (for some reason, to apply to Mandarin schools, you need a Chinese name. Even if you're not Chinese...), because OMG she's my idol.

Oh, hard nose reporter Shan Wu Shuang, you rock my world!
My Queen episode 16 )

I watched the previews for episode 18 (episode 17 isn't subbed yet [too tired to watch the raw], I take what I can get), and OMG HOW DARE THEY LEAVE IT LIKE THAT!!! HOW DARE THEY?!
uisceros: (Defeated Queen)
Two random pieces of news. FIRST! I just found out about a new drama that will hopefully (HOPEFULLY, Taiwan!) be airing in the summer or fall.

It's called "Just Want To Depend On You", and it stars Jerry Yan and Ella. So bit of a dream cast for me (ELLLLA!). Apparently Jerry plays a cold divorce lawyer, and Ella will play a nanny to two children. There's even a tidbit in the article about how Jerry's character mistakes Ella's character for a lesbian.

I'm going to LOVE it.

Random article about My Queen (mostly about Wen Sheng Hao, who apparently doesn't think he's attractive. Sorry dude, you're hot...)
Too deep into "My Queen"; Wen Sheng Hao hates to be a cuckold. If Wu Shuang ends up with Yun Hao, I think I'll cry. I think Ethan and Cheryl should be a couple in real life. They're SO cute together. But I think Ethan's still with Tiffany Xu... maybe not.

THIRD! Abe Tsuyoshi marries Chinese actress! Congrats to him! (But what is with all the marriages lately?!)
uisceros: (Hagu-chan)
Two additional things from today;

1. I was wrong about the ending to Dal Ja's Spring. It killed me. I loved it SO MUCH. It was perfect because both Dal Ja and Tae Bong grew up. Kinda like the 1 year time jump at the end of Hello My Teacher. Just enough time for the people to mature.

Also, still in love with Lee Min Ki. Why hasn't he been in any dramas recently?! (Yes, I know it's because he's been doing bunches of movies, but still...)

I miss the damn show already. It's weird, every single kdrama I've watched I've had a strong reaction to (except for, strangely, Goong. Not that I dislike it, but I'm not flailing about over it).

Crap. Now I want to rewatch Hello My Teacher.

2. My Queen episode 15 also killed me. But in a totally different way. It broke my heart. I'm pretty irritated with Wu Shuang right now. She's so awesome, and she's letting it all drift away because of Yun Hao. Yun Hao isn't a bad guy, but he should realize Wu Shuang is not acting like herself. I REALLY hate how she acts around him, like she's gone soft.

The previews for episode 16 look promising though; Wu Shuang getting back to her hard reporter awesomeness. I love her so much, I can't stand her acting so unlike herself. She acts normal around Lucas!

And God, poor Lucas. My heart is breaking into a million pieces for him, because he's SUCH an amazing guy (seriously, they keep going on about how immature he is, but he's probably one of the most decent, most mature drama heroes I've seen). And he just can't catch a break.

Also; holy shit Jia Jia! She's CRAZY, and not in a good way. Like, freaking psychotic.

I'm planning a huge Dal Ja pimp post, because that drama rules. It also occurred to me that I never posted my picspam/pimp-posts for Anmitsu Hime SP1 (which I watched back in January), Bangkok Love Story, and Twenty Something Taipei. Plus, I did have a huge Coffee Prince write-up that I never posted, and my massive My Girl post (which got deleted right after I finished writing it. Thanks for that, LJ). God knows if I'll ever get them done. I tend to plan big things, and only follow them halfway through. But they're still there, waiting...

That got long, so I'll end. NOW! (But I think I know what I'm watching next...)
uisceros: (Defeated Queen)
I love LOVE love Dal Ja's Spring. Seriously. Love it beyond words.

But, for all it's awesomeness, it's no My Queen. I do not lie when I say My Queen is currently my third favorite drama of all time (only just after Love Contract and Coffee Prince, both of which I effuse praise on obsessively).

Wu Shuang, still rocking.
My Queen episode 14 picspam )
uisceros: (Xin Yi x Cun Xi)
I'm not going to bother extolling the virtues of My Queen, because honestly, I've said it 8 million times already. I will say this though; BEST CURRENTLY AIRING DRAMA.

And Cheryl is freaking gorgeous! Seriously, massive girlcrush.

thoughts on episode 13 )

No work tomorrow, so I can stay up late doing my YesAsia post! Yay!
uisceros: (Nagase)
I waited a long time for the last episode of My Queen. First I wanted to wait until all parts were subbed. Then viikii wasn't working for me. So I finally watched it, and just, wow. I love that drama so much. It's freaking amazing.

Lucas is probably the most mature, adult drama hero I've ever seen. He does things for Wu Shuang so that she can be happy, even if they take her away from him. He cleared up the misunderstanding between her and Yun Hao, despite knowing that they would get back together. He's not perfect (too perfect is boring), but he's wonderful. Ethan is really a good actor. His confession scene was extremely powerful. I just wanted to hug him.

And Wu Shuang... my favorite drama heroine ever. Right now she's confused, and vulnerable. But she still has the balls to knock some sense into a restaurant manager for treating an employee unfairly. I want to be her so badly. I don't get why everyone hates her, if I were them, I'd be laying flowers at her feet and building a shrine.

I can't wait to see episode 13!!

I have SUCH a girlcrush on Cheryl Yang. She's beautiful. And Wu Shuang is a freaking goddess.
a few more caps )

Btw, I don't know if anyone would know, but Wu Shuang calls her mother "ah bu", but the subtitles say 媽, which would be pronounced "ma". I've never heard this before, and it's confusing me. Is it just some random Taiwan thing I don't know about? Is it Taiwanese? Or maybe Hakka or Hokkien?

I also watched the second episode of Utahime. I like it a lot, but I'm not getting into it yet. Sometimes it takes 4 or 5 episodes for me to really get into a drama. Until that happens, things go relatively slowly.

But whatever. Nagase is beautiful, and I want to have his babies.

His english was amazingly cute, and actually pretty damn good considering. He actually knew the whole song, which was impressive.

Holy crap, this Son Dam Bi / Big Bang remix is GREAT

Um, even though like, no one else is watching it, WTF LOST?!

Seriously, LOST, wtf? )

In drama news, My Queen continues to rule my life with it's awesomeness. These characters are amazing... So yes, picspam for episode 11 (the caps SUCK, but honestly, these were the best I could come up with currently. The raw hasn't been uploaded yet for download. These are from youtube)

Episode 11 rocked )

Wu Shuang and Lucas are still my OTP, but they just HAD to make Yun Hao awesome as well. Jeez.

Still haven't watched BBF 23. Probably tomorrow. I've been tired recently. Plus, BOOOK! Still haven't finished it. I'm going to try to catch up on comments in a bit.
uisceros: (Defeated Queen)
Okay, several things;

1. Finished My Boss, My Hero. At this time, I honestly think Nagase may have usurped Shun-kun as my favorite j-actor (I think they're tied), which is HUGE. Shun was not only my first Japanese actor crush, but my first Asian drama-boy crush in general. But OMG Nagase. Whenever I see him I freak out a little bit. It's kinda embarrassing, the amount of girlish squee I let fly when I see him.

So I needed another picspam.
Last episode of My Boss My Hero )

Would it be bad if I flew to Japan, and spent all my energy stalking him? Because, honestly, I'm THIIIS close.

2. Haagen Dazs' in Taiwan are a whole hell of a lot nicer than they are in the US.

And while the whole engagement ring in the dessert thing is kinda cliche, I still melted quite a bit during that scene in My Queen (not a spoiler, it was a flashback).

See! Even the ice cream is fancier at Taiwanese Haagen Dazs'! That one is called a "Love Poem". See the Shakespeare poem under the ice cream? Can't make out which one it is.

3. I (finally) finished watched episode 19 and 20 of BBF. I'm going to post my thoughts in a separate post, because this one is getting long.

4. I'm not sure what my next drama will be. I kinda want to watch Dal Ja's Spring, but I also want to watch something with Nagase in it... Plus, I need to finish The Rose. And Black & White starts soon, so I want something relatively quick... Meh! Decisions decisions. Plus I just got a HUGE book on Taiwanese history that I want to read...
uisceros: (Defeated Queen)
Holy crap! The subbing is going REALLY fast for My Queen episode 10!! I can't wait to get home tonight to watch it... again (but this time, actually FULLY UNDERSTAND it!)

I honestly have no idea why this drama isn't more popular. It's SO GOOD, and it's leading the ratings in Taiwan by a hugely significant margin. Not that ratings mean much of anything of course, but you'd think a popular show like that would translate overseas...

It's kinda sad that when I search for "Defeated Queen drama" on google, my blog is one of the first listed. (Weirdly before the Asianfanatics thread)

It's dramas like this that not only reaffirm by intense love of twdramas, they also remind me of why I love dramas to begin with. A lot of the times twdramas are silly and hugely overacted (part of the appeal, I say!), but sometimes they get things amazingly right, where everything falls into place, and you can't help but be sucked in to the awesomeness. The acting in this drama is particularly amazing. Cheryl is fabulous. FAB-U-LOUS. Ethan is pretty damn good as well (though overshadowed by the goddess that is Cheryl Yang).

Taiwan, you rock my world.

*sigh* I suppose I should do some actual work now instead of incessantly googling My Queen to find juicy spoilers/tidbits.

I totally cannot contain my love for this drama.

iTunes meme #1! )

iTunes meme #2!! )

Watched episode 10 of My Queen. Couldn't really understand what was happening, but I DO know I'm EXTREMELY pissed at Yun Hao. Bastard leaves the AMAZING Wu Shuang right before their wedding, and doesn't send word to her for SIX YEARS, and then suddenly decides to appear in her life again, JUST as she's starting a relationship with Lucas. JUST as she's feeling confident in her appeal again. And now he's confusing her, because despite him being an asshole, Wu Shuang loved him.

Yun Hao = BASTARD.

As far as I can tell, despite being (rightfully) upset with the whole situation, Wu Shuang isn't giving him the time of day. The previews for the next episode look like Yun Hao actually does worm his way into her life again, which makes sense. Because, despite being amazing and kickass, Wu Shuang is highly fragile. She doesn't really have friends, her coworkers are horrible to her, and the love of her life left her without any explanation. It's no wonder she'd fall back on him, even though HE'S AN ASS.

(He's an ass for leaving her, but he doesn't appear to be a bad person otherwise. The indomitable Wu Shuang would never fall for a horrible guy. So, as asshole-y as he's being, I don't think he's normally such a douche.)

Gah! Wu Shuang, you deserve SO MUCH BETTER. You're AWESOME. Hook up with Lucas, for goodness sakes! Be a cougar!

(I'm so in love with Cheryl Yang now, and will have to watch everything she's been in. Luckily most of them are already on my list. And hey! She was in My Secret Garden with Ariel! And I REALLY want to see Qian Niu Hua Kai De Ri Zi now, it looks super good!)

I'm finally finishing the subbed version of the latest episode of My Queen (I had watched it previously without subs), and oh wow is it amazing. I cannot believe how good this show is.

I love how Wu Shuang, this totally kickass unstoppable woman can't even say a thing while Lucas is confessing to her and telling her friends that even though he doesn't have money or success, he wants to be with her.

I'm so excited for the next episode! I'm going to watch it unsubbed ASAP.

There's only 14 this time (I'm telling you, I'm REALLY slow). Mostly Taiwanese. Two Korean.

Icon Batch 1 Here

I think I've gotten better!

Icons! )

After viewing [livejournal.com profile] darkeyedwolf's Yoon Eun Hye picspam, I felt the incredibly urge to icon her. So I did, and now will share! I only made a few this time, but I have a ton more ideas. Also, since I was making pretty girl icons, I of course needed to make one of Qiao En!

I'm watching My Queen episode 9 without english subs. Surprisingly, I am able to understand a lot more than I thought I would (not that that's a LOT, per se, but it's something!) Yay Mandarin learnings!

I totally keep stopping the video to look up the Chinese characters...

I can't really understand what happened in this scenes, but Ethan totally just called Ehlo a "Mommy Boy" (yes, that is what the Chinese subtitles said... in english. Confused yet?)

And then he stole Ehlo's clothes.

Holy crap! I CAN READ THIS
Not that's it's a hard sentence, but whatever. ACCOMPLISHMENT!

It says "Do you love Shang Wu Shuang Jie" (Jie = older sister, respectful term)
Pinyin; "Nǐ ài Shàng Wú Shuāng Jiě le ma"

He answers by saying "I don't know", and while I can't READ it, I do understand it when I hear it; "Wǒ bù zhī dào". I'm thinking I should watch stuff without subs more often. I'm surprised how much Mandarin I know already.
uisceros: (Defeated Queen)
For three days and eight episodes I have contained my intense, insane, amazingly love for this drama, but I cannot hold it anymore. I wanted to watch all of the released episodes before I commented. And I JUST finished them.

I am utterly in love with My Queen / Defeated Queen. I haven't been this excited about a drama in a long time. It's amazingly sweet, smart, funny, sexy, and just perfect. It's an adult drama. This one isn't catering to the teenagers.

Plus, it features probably the GREATEST HEROINE KNOWN TO DRAMA-KIND. Shan Wu Shuang (played by Cheryl Yang) is a goddess. She's amazing. She's tough, professional, dedicated, beautiful, rich, fearless, arrogant, and proud. At the same time she's delicate, sensitive, and self conscious. She's perfect. She's who I want to be when I grow up.

That's another important point. Wu Shuang is (almost) 33. Everyone treats her as an old hag. She's defiant, but obviously it gets to her. That's the major point between her and Lucas. Ethan plays Lucas, the love interest. He's 25. 8 years younger. Naturally she kinda flips out about being attracted to him. Lucas is great, he's the kind-hearted, too good to be true hero with the dark past. He's not an ass at all, he's understanding, gentle, thoughtful, and sweet.

The chemistry between Ethan and Cheryl is AMAZING. The OTP is to die for. They argue, they have meaningful talks, they smolder, they STARE at each other longingly. It's really good. Did I mention how amazingly hot Ethan is in this?

The other actors are great too. Another REALLY fun point; About 80% of the side characters are from Fated to Love You or Prince Turns to Frog. Which makes me think it's a J-star drama... I'm surprised they didn't make Qiao En star in it. She's only two years younger than Cheryl...

Another thing the drama has going for it; a GREAT OST. Fish Leong sings most of the songs, and her voice is intensely ethereal.

I first heard of this drama when I read that article on AF about current twdramas. It looked interesting, so I then researched it a bit. I was immediately interest because it was Ethan. And the age different hooked me. I started downloading it, but didn't watch it until I read what [livejournal.com profile] seven_trees thought of it. I watched the first episode, and knew immediately that it was going to be my new crack.

Rather random picspam )

So yes. THIS is my new drama, and I love it dearly. The next episode comes out this Sunday. I think it plays at the same time as Superstar Express. Thus SE being a ratings failure makes sense to me. In my opinion, My Queen is far better than SE (not that SE isn't amazing as well, just not as good, IMO of course). It's been at the top of the Taiwanese ratings charts for it's entire run. It's no real surprise, actually. It's really a great drama. Can't WAIT for Sunday!

And, for the record, I've already witnessed quite a bit of twdrama cliches. It has 6 so far, a respectable number;
Drinking/getting drunk (almost always the female lead)
The setting is Taipei
Girls passing out all the time
Token shot of the 101
(This one earned bonus points. The first token shot was at night. The second token shot was the new years fireworks at the 101!)
The same scene being filmed from about 5 different angles
(This is the most prevalent. Not as bad at YY3+1, but still highly present)
uisceros: (Ethan OK la)
Yeah. Definitely getting sick. Lovely.

It's also freaking snowing. I'm SO SICK of snow. I know it's good though. A large snowpack in the mountains means less chance of periodic droughts in the summer. And less summer droughts mean a chance of a better foliage season. And lets be honest, the foliage is the real reason to live in New England. Still, it's Goddamn annoying.

I never posted this picture, did I?
A combination of the thing I love most, with the thing I hate most )

And because I'm antsy, but my brain isn't working well enough to really follow a drama right now, I'm going to do a mini picspam for Green Forest. Without much explanation. But whatever.

The high point of Green Forest for me is Ethan Ruan (though I AM enjoying Esther Liu as Sophie). I know a lot of people dislike him because of his character in Fated to Love You. And yes, Cun Xi was an asshole. I still loved him, because I fall for those type of characters easily. But regardless, in Green Forest he's the 'other guy', which means I love him even more. He's ridiculously charming in the role, plays violin, and speaks english. It's pretty awesome. Plus, there's a rain scene in the second episode, and he's wet. It's nice...

mini Green Forest picspam )

Oh, and I got an awesome new moodtheme... BOYS BEFORE FLOWERS!! I never use moods, but I have to now, because BBF!!

Da Dong, Rainie, and George on Xiao Zhu's show 100% Entertainment (ie. my favoritest show EVAR!). No subs, but still cute. (Includes some random clips from The Duchess, and Da Dong being awesome at drawing on paper lanterns)

One of the best things about Green Forest; about a quarter of the time they speak in english. Like, ALL of them (mostly Leon Jay Williams, but Ethan and Esther have both kicked it english style as well).

I'm working on something... I'll post it in an hour or so. Depends on when I finish...
uisceros: (Zai Zai in blue)
Summary of ratings for Taiwan's Idol Dramas: Performance of 'ToGetHer' is mediocre

First off, they changed the name of Superstar Express to "ToGetHer"?! No wonder the ratings suck... I hate it when there are those last minute changes to drama names (in english)... while the original titles aren't always great, the alternative titles are always 50% worse. Like, when they changed "Invincible Shan Bao Mei" to "Woody Sambo" (which is totally 'wtf territory' to me). Why can't they just do direct translations of the Chinese name?
Thoughts on the current season of Twdramas )

When Black & White comes on, I AM going to be live-watching. It stars Zai Zai (love of my life), and Chuan Yi (not the love of my life, but close). Btw, the wiki.d-addicts site for this show has the BEST engrishy sentence ever used to summarize a drama ever; "When a case brought these two top crime solvers together, sparks flied and a little light peeked into this dark city where the nation's President is on friendly terms with the local mafia and twins kill people while drinking milkshake."

I've seen videos of Zai Zai practicing shooting guns, and holy shit is it hot. I also have recently discovered I like his shorter hair a lot better than I like his longer hair. It took me months to get used to it though. Oh Zai Zai, I still love your Mars era Farrah 'do as well.

A few news points;

Cannot lose to Ethan Ruan; Joe Cheng & Ariel Lin have another bed scene
This story is amusing to me only because it contains the phrase "there is no passionate skin contact whatsoever"...

5566 to Dissolve, New Faces to Take Over
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS!!!! I can only hope this is a rumor, but if it isn't... well I suppose they had a good run. Still... meh. Also, wtf?! "Sam Wang might be shifting his career into the bread making business to fulfill his dream"

Not going to link the whole article, but hello, best quote ever; "He is a veteran at bed scenes, and resulted in gaining the title of ‘asthma sex stick’." (BTW, they're talking about Ethan Ruan)

Arron Yan acts "handsome", kisses for 5 hours, becomes an adult in Fahrenheit’s MV
First of all, SQUEE! Aaron!! He's so cute! Second, wtf is it with female fans?! First Alan Luo, now Aaron?! Are they really THAT upset by them kissing other people while acting? Seriously people. So yay! New MV (though it's not one of my favorite songs)! But exactly why are they standing under a dangling car?

Fahrenheit promotes new album, Arron agrees to parade around Hong Kong
Poor Aaron! They're always picking on him! "The three of them forced Aaron Yan to wear swim trunks to swim in Victoria Harbour for celebration if the album sales in Hong Kong broke 50,000 copies; Aaron Yan asked them why and the three of them feel that since he is the youngest, he has to satisfy the younger fans. Aaron Yan could only agree to it unwillingly." Aw, Aaron! Ever since I saw the video of him doing that ridiculous cat dance, I've just wanted to squeeze him! It's kinda weird, because it's not like he's a kid... he's only 2/3 years younger than I am (there seem to be conflicting reports on what his birthyear actually is...)

*snort* "When Wu Zun was asked if he would imitate Aaron Kwok who showed his chest muscles at the concert if the album sales are good, he said, 'Nope! I don’t have a figure as good as him, and also not a status like him, wait until we have it then will show it!' " .... Oh Wu Zun... how I wish you would change your mind...
