Okay, so from the MOMENT I heard what Boku wa Imoto ni Koi o Suru was about, I was on that shit like white on rice. As generally weird as it is, I'm not uncomfortable with (fictional) incest stuff. I love the whole 'taboo/forbidden love' thing (one of the reasons why I love Teacher/Student), so this was right up my alley.

The thing about this movie that alienates some people (other than, you know, the incest) is that it's slow. There's not a lot of action. It's a movie of long drawn out silences, and significant pauses. Occasionally the characters stay in the same position for a long time (which made me think I had accidentally paused the movie).

Luckily, that's my type of thing. I like action stuff like everyone else, but I'm far more interested in the movies that move slowly, and allow us to see the significance in the spaces. I'm a quiet person, I don't talk a lot, if at all (I know, crazy, since I'm QUITE talkative on lj), so I'm more comfortable with the quiet.

Plus, it was shot beautifully, and I'm a sucker for good cinematography. Though it really wasn't subtle at all. It doesn't really matter, and I'm pretty sure most people don't pay attention to that stuff anyway.

Also, Hiraoka Yuta is in it, and I love him a ton (Yuuuuki-sensei!)

But yeah, I ended up liking it a lot. I didn't do a full post, but I have random comments and a few (I consider 18 a few, which is kinda sad) screenshots.

Random thoughts

Eikura Nana really IS huge! She's like, 8 thousand feet taller than everyone else! (In reality, she's only 2 cm shorter than me, and I'm tall for a white person!) she's a giant among the Japanese.

Yuta-kun! If he was all like "Do you like me?", I'd totally be like "hells yeah", and then jump him.

I also do not agree with Jun's hair. Or his littering. But hey, way to pull a Sawada Shin there, all lounging on the rooftop.

Seriously though, what kind of parents make their teenager son and daughter sleep in the same room (on bunk beds, no less?!).

What the hell kinda english book were they reading? It made no sense, dividing a coconut into small squares?

AWW! Sea otters!

That's probably how Jun always walks, but it totally reminds me of Domyoji!

Great place to make out, there. A SCIENCE LAB?! A NICE science lab, but still (if it isn't obvious by now, I pay a lot of attention to science stuff. Makes sense, I suppose).

Hehe, the intense awkwardness of when their mother is like "Do you guys have a boyfriend and girlfriend, if so, bring them over sometime!". I laughed!

The mother's weird bangs are irritating me.

The kiss between Yori and Tomoka made me uncomfortable!

In the aquarium scene, Eikura Nana looks a ton like Ayase Haruka.

Aw, Yuta, I love you. He is weirdly obsessed with the Sea Otters though...

I don't get this; I mean, Yori's all like "I love you, Iku", but then he's acting cold to her! Wtf Yori?! I HATE when guys do that in dramas/etc. They want to have another girl, but they don't want the ones they're REALLY in love with to see any other guys. You can't have it both ways, dudes!

What a bastard! Being like "I'll hurt you if this keeps going on", like if you were SOOO worried about hurting her, you shouldn't have made a pass at her to begin with. JEEZ!

I half want Yuta to beat the shit out of Jun for doing that to her. But he's too good for that. He's really quite the liberal. But he's right, you know, no matter how squicky it is, you can't help who you love.

I keep staring at Jun's eyebrows. He has really nice eyebrows.

I love male friendship stuff. It makes me happy!

But is Yano in love with Yori? I'm lost.

There are lots of shots with long distances between people. Mmmm cinematographic metaphors.

Oh, she's calling him on his bastardness of making her choose, but then going out with another girl.

Ohhh the fields... that's a pretty heavy handed metaphor.

Screenshots!
(I'm too tired/lazy to actually synch my comments with the pictures, so whatever)

BTW, he's totally littering in this pic

Science Lab!

This in an instance where they literally stayed in that position for a full minute plus

The ending was ambiguous, which wasn't necessarily bad. It fit the movie theme well. *sigh* I now have to totally read the manga.

ETA: I'm reading the manga now. I'm on volume 2, and wow, this is DEFINITELY not a manga for kids (not that it would be, with the incest and all, but still). But, Yori is SO MUCH MORE of a bastard in it. Not that that's really a bad thing, but yeah. He's an ass.

See, total asshole. I still really like him though.
