I approve of all the winners ;D

Essentially everyone I thought was going to win, did. I'm so glad Kathryn Bigelow won, because while I haven't seen The Hurt Locker yet, I've only heard amazing things. And honestly, as much as I enjoyed Avatar, and as groundbreaking special-effects wise it was, a movie should be judged based on merit, not how many tickets it sold.

I cried when Oprah spoke about Gabourey Sidibe, because that girl deserves so much praise for everything. I love that she is breaking boundaries in Hollywood. I love that people seem to finally be recognizing that talented, amazing people come in all shapes and sizes. Crap, I'm crying now thinking about it...

I'm a little up in the air about The Cove winning for best doc. I haven't seen it, but the topic bothers me a bit. Of course it's VERY important for people to be more knowledgeable about dolphin slaughter, but how is it any different than regular animal slaughter (the meat industry)? As Americans, we don't eat dolphin meat (normally), so we view them as akin to dogs or cats. It's like how we view the Korean or Chinese custom of eating dog meat. We, as Americans, are so incensed by it, and yet how is it any different that eating any other animal? It bothers me that people think some animals deserve to be killed more than others. (Yes, I am a long time vegetarian, but that's not my point here)

Politics aside, I enjoyed the telecast quite a bit.

Random, but favorite dresses:
- Sandra Bullock looked AMAZING in her gold dress, with fabulous detailing. Her hair looked amazing, and her makeup was nicely done.
- Anna Kendrick's dress was lovely. I would have liked it more if it were a darker color, but the actual dress is breathtaking. Seriously, I want that dress. NOW. I cannot accurately describe how much I love that dress.
- I was so pleasantly surprised by Cameron Diaz, because for the last few seasons she's been kinda iffy. Her dress tonight was gorgeous. Not only that, but she looked fabulous in it.
- Gabourey Sidibe's dress was gorgeous. The color was fantastic with her skintone, and it was extremely flattering. Simple, and yet glammed up with the beading.
- I quite enjoyed Jennifer Lopez's dress. It's not my style in the least (I like more flowy chiffon stuff), but it was still quite gorgeous. Very sculptural.
- Finally (I'm sure I'm missing more, but these are all I can think of right now), I adored the gowns of Vera Farmiga, Julianne Moore, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Vera's was amazing, a risk that paid off, because she looked amazing in it. The color suited her very well, and the ruffles were very haute couture without being unwearable. Julianne's dress was so pretty. I didn't like the top as much (I couldn't see the detailing that well, but I wasn't too fond of it from what I DID see), but the bottom was lovely. The pearlish white was beautifully shimmery, and didn't wash her out in the slightest. Last, Michelle's dress... It wasn't anything groundbreaking, but it suited her so well. The dark red color was gorgeous, and let's face it, Michelle Pfeiffer always looks amazing.

Other dresses I really liked, but can't easily find links too (mostly because I'm lazy, and don't want to reupload)...
- Zoe Saldana's purple dress. Very much an Oscar!dress, a statement. Not for everyone, but I quite liked it.
- Amanda Seyfried's silvery white gown. She and J.Lo rocked very similar styles, but I liked Amanda's better, less sculpture, more princess.
- Penelope Cruz's red folded/pleated dress. Penelope always delivers on red-carpet glam. I love how she goes for a traditionally long ballgown, yet the dresses are never typical.
- Maggie Gyllenhaal's blue printed column was fabulous. It was fresh, and non-traditional, perfect for her.
- Rachel McAdams's multicolored pastelish dress. It's hard to describe but I LOOOVE it. Very much my style (seriously, long and flowy = my style), and I want to steal it. The colors are fabulous too.

Number one dress I did not like? Easy, Charlize Theron's dress. It was a risk, but definitely didn't work. Rosettes on your boobs? Really? On the plus side, Charlize's makeup and hair was very nice. Also, her skin looks fantastic. Which reminds me, I'm glad tan wasn't a big trend this year. Most everyone went natural, which is much better than hideously over-tanned.

Random comment: Jeff Bridge's wife, Susan Geston is GORGEOUS. Seriously, she's beautiful.

You should see the documentary. It covers a lot of issues on why this particular trade is wrong. Predictably, they did a bit on how intelligent and how self-aware self aware dolphins are to make the brutal killing scenes have more impact, but then again, pigs are very intelligent and it's not like the average American hates pork.

IMO, I think the biggest issues addressed in The Cove are the fact that these dolphins aren't being bred to be mass-killed, like most livestock/dogs/cats in the meat industry are. The amount of wild dolphins that are being killed annually can severely impact the population/ecosystem. That and most people, when they buy beef/pork/whatever, actually know what they're purchasing. Most of the time the fishers don't know what to do with the sheer number of dolphins they capture and sell a good majority of it as other types of meat/fish to the Japanese population (many of who don't really consider it a custom anymore, same for koreans and dogs). That, and said meat is usually infected with harmful quantities of mercury because of all the pollution.

OT, but Theron. OMG- that dress is not flattering whatsoever, especially to the area it draws the most attention to. D:

True, I don't know a lot about the dolphin issue and haven't seen the documentary (I won't see it either, I can't handle watching things where animals are injured or killed, even fictionally. I can barely even stand to read the newsletters I get from the MSPCA). As such, I wasn't really speaking about the documentary itself, I can't judge something I haven't seen. (And maybe I didn't make this clear enough, but I fully support the documentary, and it's message that the mass killing of dolphins in Japan is wrong. However this is not my point) I was just speaking to my confusion as to why people tend to not think that other animals (cows, chickens, pigs, turkeys, fish, etc) are entitled to the same degree of social outrage as dolphins (or cats, dogs, horses, etc).

I know most people view things on a scale, which is normal. We're raised to view cows and chickens are lower on the scale, because we've been eating them for generations. Animals like dolphins, which are adorable, gentle, and relatively docile are higher up. I know that's how things normally work, but that is not how I see things, and never has been. Maybe it's a Buddhist influence (not that I'm really religious), but I believe all life is important, no matter how small (I don't kill incests, and avoid killing plants if possible). Incidentally this issue always has, and always will confuse me personally. It's more of a personal question for me, than it is a subject I believe people should discuss. But then, this is my blog, so I can voice my own questions to the world.

That is an interesting point. Much like the consumption of bushmeat in African is impacting the great ape population... While I definitely don't believe in animal farming, destroying the ecosystem is never good.
(I didn't meat that Chinese or Koreans eat dog meat much at all anymore (in fact, in some places, like Taiwan, it's illegal), only that in the past they did, therefore dogs do not play the same cultural role there as they do in the USA)

Thank you for your opinion! The documentary honestly does sound quite good, but I'll never be able to get past the animal death in it.

Also, OMG I KNOW! Maybe she was trying to show off her boobs? I have no idea. The color was very nice though, I'll give it that :D

Oh, I can definitely relate. I could only bring myself to watch it because it was required for my environment science class (due to the mercury pollution discussed), and even then covered my eyes whenever any of the actual killing was going on. It was absolutely heartbreaking; I can see why you'd want to avoid seeing it for yourself, as I'd been doing the same up until a little while back. And as for my response- I just wanted to clarify that the documentary itself focuses more on the objective reasons against dolphin slaughter, like population, mercury poisoning, politics, etc- albeit in addition to the whole "poor dolphins" charade.

The whole thing unfolded sort of like an action flick, if that makes any sense- since the people involved were "exposing" a huge conspiracy (and I suppose it was, since the federal govt was involved?) by making and releasing this film. :P

I thought Sandra Bullock looked matronly in her dress. o_0
Penelope's dress reminded me of a gown that Keira Knightley once wore. Thought Keira's dress was way better than Penelope but hey....Penelope is one fucking gorgeous woman. She can wear garbage and make it look like Versace made it.
