I just got home, and found out that;
- There was a huge earthquake in Japan
- There was a huge tsunami in Japan
- There is a tsunami warning for Taiwan
The first tsunami wave is supposed to hit Taiwan around 5:30pm. It's 4pm right now. So I have an hour and a half to wonder what the fuck is happening.
I'm... feeling a little weird. Back home I don't have to deal with stuff like this. I'm not really worried for myself. I'm far enough inland where I doubt I'd be affected. I'm in Yonghe City, which is here. I'm not near the coast, but I am near a river.
I'm worried for northern Taiwan. I'm worried in general. I'm sad for Japan. I'm sad for Taiwan. I'm sad for everyone effected.
I also don't really know what's happening. CNN isn't really broadcasting about Taiwan, and the local news is no real help, since I can only understand a bit. From what I can understand, Taipei isn't going to be heavily effected, but the north and east probably will.
I'm just really glad we at least get some warning here. I'm worried.
We'll see what happens, I guess. I'll try to go out to the coast tomorrow to report what I see. I don't want to risk it today.
EDIT - Taiwan escaped damage. On the east coast of Taiwan there is a very deep oceanic trench. Not good for swimmers, but good as a buffer for typhoons and tsunamis. This protected the island fairly well. We didn't have any abnormal waves. Of course there are still the aftershocks to worry about, but in general I'd say it's safe here.
Now the concern seems to be the danger of an earthquake in Taiwan. It's recently been a hotbed of earthquake activity in the Pacific. New Zealand, Japan, Hawaii... Taiwan is not exempt. There are several earthquakes every day here. Almost all are too minor to be felt. But they're still there. And for someone like me, who never had to deal with earthquake risks, it's quite scary.
