Movie pimp post with picspams!

I thought I'd do a big ol' movie pimp / picspam post! I feel like it's been awhile, so yay!
Plus, I have time. It's the weekend, and I NEVER do anything on Saturdays (actually, I sleep. A LOT)
I have three movies to post about; Twenty Something Taipei, Miao Miao, and Seducing Mr. Perfect. My write ups contain MAJOR SPOILERS, so don't read if you don't want to know.
Also, I've been thinking of uploading Twenty Something Taipei. Anyone interested?

Twenty Something Taipei is a movie I actually purchased from YesAsia awhile ago without really knowing what it was about. I'm glad I bought it though, it's a good movie and I loved it! It's one of those Hong Kong-company made movies that takes place in Taiwan and has Taiwanese actors (including CHERYL YANG, which was totally the reason I bought it! Ehlo Huang definitely helped as well). It was in Mandarin, but the DVD had an option to have it dubbed in Cantonese.
The movie has a cast of eight main characters, and focuses on their interpersonal relationships. This is, um, not a movie for the younger crowd. It features lots and lots of sex and nudity, violence, and drug use (but not really gratuitously). It shows the life of a 20-something living in modern Taipei (thus, you know, the title).
BTW, some of these caps I've already posted

This is Xiao Ma. A drug dealer. Also, IT'S STANLEY HUANG!

His father is dying in the hospital, and so he does the only thing he can think of to make his father's life easier... he drugs him with pot. It's pretty sweet and sad actually.

This is Hitomi, a girl who is desperately trying to become an actress. She is willing to do anything for her dream to come true, which includes sleeping with any small time director or producer who promises her a role in something.

This is Cindy, an office worker who is a major party girl. She meets men online (and has cyber sex at work), and parties at clubs with them at night. She's tragically in love with Xiao Ma.

Ben (Ehlo Huang!) works at a music company. He's a playboy, and in the first scene he's offering himself as a birthday gift to Cindy.

Eva (CHERYL!!!!!) has just come back from America. An old friend of Cindy's, she works at a beer company, where she runs into Ben again (they met at the club previously, when Ben was offering himself to Cindy as a birthday present).

Sparks fly immediately between Eva and Ben
.
This is rather random, but it's important to the story later. The guy that Cindy talks to online goes to meet her. She specified that he be holding one hundred balloons. So he does. When Cindy meets him, she lets all the balloons go.

Xiao Ma is a loner, and doesn't participate much in the conversations. Regardless, he cares a good deal about his friends.
Hitomi is pure optimism, and randomly carries an iron around in her purse...

The girl on the right is Vivi. Vivi is a schoolteacher who is in love and living with Cola.

Cola (on the right) is a hairstylist, and a MAJOR player. He cheats on Vivi constantly. I like this picture!

Iden is the DJ at the club that the friends hang out at. She's a lesbian, who is best friends with Vivi. She's also in love with her.

I love this scene. It's Eva and Ben's first date. They're adorable together.

After Cola cheats on Vivi again, Iden comforts her.

He then apologizes. Naked.

This is random, but I HAD to post it! Taiwanese Hooters!

Eva and Ben, who fell in love at first sight, decide to live together. They rent an apartment, and invite their friends for a welcoming party. Where they get drunk and high.

We find out that Eva is a virgin, who is waiting for true love and marriage before she sleeps with anyone. This puts some definite strain on her and Ben's relationship, as Ben is used to instant gratification.

Meanwhile, Xiao Ma's father is getting sicker. He seeks comfort through a friend he met online who goes by the name of "Summer Blue".

While out one night, Vivi catches Cola cheating (AGAIN), and again seeks comfort from Iden who is only too glad to drop the girl she was making out with.

Ben comes back one night to find Eva cooking. She has decided that even though she can't sleep with him yet, she will, um, satisfy him (I think we all know what I'm trying to say here). Ben refuses, and instead walks out. Eva is broken by the refusal (I love Ehlo, but I CANNOT FORGIVE him for making Cheryl cry! THIS IS THE SECOND TIME TOO (he was in My Queen!)). Frustrated, Ben goes to Cindy, and they have sex. Ben accidentally calls her while... doing things, and she hears the whole encounter. She turns up at Cindy's apartment to see him come out. Seeing confirmation, she gets in the taxi and leaves Ben there.

Later Cindy goes to the club, where she confronts Xiao Ma about why he's so cold to her. He tells her he doesn't like people like her.

Cola eventually picks the wrong girl to hit on, and is accosted by a mob boss. The mob boss beats him up, and Vivi runs to him to try to protect Cola. The mob guy talks about how Cola is messing around with all the girls he can because he's ashamed at his past, where he learned hairstyling from an old pervy guy who made Cola sleep with him. Cola runs out into the rain, with Vivi following. He tells her to leave him, as he's good for nothing and always cheating on her. Iden shows up to comfort Vivi again. She and Vivi end up sleeping together, where Vivi tells Iden that she's always know that Iden's loved her. Cola walks in on them, and seeing Vivi finally happy, he leaves the apartment and her life.

Eva decides to go back to the US after Ben cheats on her. Despite still loving each other, they realize they have to part.

Xiao Ma's father dies, and depressed he wants to meet with Summer Blue. They meet in a dark hotel room, and start to have sex. About halfway through Xiao Ma realizes that Summer Blue is, in fact, Cindy. She tells him that she loves him, but disgusted by her deception, he leaves. He sits in his car for awhile (getting high), and finally decides to go back to her. He gets out of his car, and is crossing the street when he's mowed down by a trunk. Cindy, who has just left the hotel, hears the accident, and turns, unknowing Xiao Ma's fate. (You know, when I was watching this and he was about to cross the street, I literally said to the screen "Don't get hit by a car!", and then he did... Seriously, WHY ARE PEOPLE ALWAYS GETTING HIT BY CARS?!)

One year later: Vivi and Iden are married. Cola sees the news in his new modest barber shop, and is happy for her. Hitomi has finally secured a decent, not shady acting gig. Cindy is still working in her office. She is sitting at her computer one day, when she sees a bunch of balloons float past her window. She runs over, and looks down to see the guy she had met a year before online. Smiling at her, he releases all the balloons.
So yes, it's bittersweet, and sad, and just really good!

Miao Miao is a movie I've had on my computer for awhile, but never got around to watching it. SO GLAD I did. It's a Taiwanese movie along the same vein as Eternal Summer (OH GOD, SO GOOD) and Summer's Tail (and even The Best of Times, to an extent); being slice of life movies that focus on complex interpersonal relations between friends and love interests. They're not the type of movies for everyone (they tend to be slow moving, very subtle, and unlike twdramas, do not feature tidy happy endings), but I personally love them.
This movie is basically about two schoolgirls, Xiao Ai, and Miao Miao. Miao Miao has recently transferred to Taipei from Japan, and wants to spend her time in Taiwan finding love. She meets
Chen Fei, a reclusive CD storm owner, and falls in love with him. Miao Miao (the movie, not just the character) deals with finding yourself and finding and losing love on the way.

Xiao Ai and Miao Miao become fast friends, partially because Miao Miao is a great baker and Xiao Ai wants desperately to make good cakes.

Chen Fei is all reclusive, wears noise canceling earphones all the time, and runs a used CD store. He's also constantly searching for a demo CD that he can't find.

This is a random pic, but I liked it! The store owner makes Chen Fei hug him, and Chen Fei is all like "Wtf?... Oh well", and hugs him!

Did I mention the cinematography in this is AMAZING?! Get ready for seriously gratuitous beautiful shot caps that have nothing to do with anything!

So um, when I did Viter Fan's picspam, I posted a pic where he was sitting by the side of the road with flowers. I now know that the picture was from this movie.

If you're feeling a lesbian vibe, well, you're correct.

After randomly stumbling on Chen Fei's music store, Miao Miao becomes fascinated with him, and goes there each day after school with Xiao Ai.

OMG CINEMATOGRAPHY! Film geekgasm! Xiao Ai never knew her mother, and she is cold to her father. She explains that she once saw a woman in his room when she was younger, and since then hasn't been able to talk to him. She says that she always wanted to feel close to someone, and has dreamed on having her best friend over to her house where they can look at the stars. Btw, this house is AMAZING.

The girls try to find out information about Chen Fei. That includes irritating him.

They find out the book he's reading, and Miao Miao reads it as well. In English, no less. It's On the Road, a Penguin classic!! I have some Penguin classics (though the only one I can seem to find is a collection of Borges’ short stories)

One day Miao Miao skips school, gets dressed up, and visits Chen Fei.

Meanwhile Xiao Ai calls her to try to tell her Chen Fei's secret; that he used to be part of an acclaimed band that recorded a demo, and then broke up. The demo he's looking for is his own.

While Miao Miao is in Chen Fei's store, a dude comes in, and accosts her. Chen Fei kicks him out, but he waits outside. Chen Fei drives Miao Miao home, as she's scared by the guy. (The last shot is one of those awesome cinematography shots)

These two shots have nothing to do with anything, but I had to post them, because; A. HAHOO!, and B. I totally have the bento box that Miao Miao has! It's from putifresh, and it has apples on it! I actually have the whole putifresh apple set!

More beautiful shots. As Miao Miao discusses how she wants to go on a date with Chen Fei, Xiao Ai gets jealous that Miao Miao wants to spend time with someone else besides her. It's around this time that Xiao Ai realizes that she is in love with Miao Miao.

After Chen Fei rejects her offer of a date, Miao Miao gets all drunk, and goes to find him. They look at the stars, and Chen Fei subtly tells her that he cannot date her. VERY subtly.

In flashbacks we see Chen Fei with one of his band mates, Bei. Bei declares his love for Chen Fei, but Chen Fei isn't as loquacious about his feelings. At one point his old band mates come to see Chen Fei, and talk about what happened to Bei was an accident, and he needs to get over it. We assume Bei is dead.

Heartbroken, Miao Miao waits outside the music store. Chen Fei, still upset over Bei's death, decides that he needs to give up selling music, because it's too much of a reminder.

Xiao Ai confronts Chen Fei about leaving, and he tells her his story. He takes her to the place by the road where he was placing flowers easier, and tells her that this is where Bei died (hit by a car, of course). He tells her that he was Bei's boyfriend and his producer, and that he no longer has anything of Bei's. No pictures, no recording of his voice, nothing. That is why he was so desperately trying to find the demo CD. He simply cannot accept Miao Miao.

Xiao Ai tries to cheer Miao Miao up... with chicken feet.

These shots are more beautiful if I don't explain them...
Anyway, the story isn't tragic, as the last shots would suggest. It ends on a hopeful (but bittersweet) note. Chen Fei finds some resolution, Xiao Ai is finally able to talk to her dad (though she never ends up telling Miao Miao her feelings), and Miao Miao goes back to Japan, having found what she was looking for; beautiful memories. It's a really good movie, very reminiscent of Eternal Summer, and I LOVED it.
~~~~~~~~
Seducing Mr. Perfect was a really nice departure. A Korean movie starring Daniel Henney, this movie is like pure delicious fluff. I LOVED it! It reminded me a lot of Dal Ja's Spring for some reason (which was a decidedly good thing), and felt very distinctly Korean on the whole. The best part was Daniel Henney spoke English through the WHOLE MOVIE (except for a few Korean phrases, and one instance where he spoke in Japanese). Seriously, about half of it was in English, which was awesome. He's going on and on in English, and Uhm Jung Hwa is speaking in Korean, and it was perfect. Obviously not the best movie ever, but I really really enjoyed it. And God, Daniel Henney...
I didn't take as many caps in this movie, and I'm not really going to bother with a real plot summary, because most of the caps I took aren't really cohesive to a summary.
So! This is Robin, an American business man who came to Korea to oversee a takeover. The heroine, Min Joon, literally runs into him (she hits his car with hers) on his first day there.
Turns out he's the new president of her company/division, and she is assigned to be his assistant.
Min Joon has just been broken up with, and cannot figure out why she's always being dumped. Robin, being quite the asshole, tells her that she's playing the game wrong. She then decides to prove him wrong, and seduce him!
Btw, Daniel Henney is SO TALL. He towers over her!
He's also RIDICULOUSLY GOOD LOOKING. But we all knew that, right?
I adore Joon. She's adorable, and not easily intimidated. At one point, while drunk, she tells Robin to "Shut the fuck up!" Keep in mind he's her boss.
Eventually, of course, Robin becomes enamored by Joon and her eccentric ways. She leaves him a note about meeting her at a bar, he adorably rereads the note, and waits for her. When she doesn't show up (because she was ambushed with a blind date), he calls her angry. When he hears that she's on a date, he gets all angry, and even angrier when her phone dies. Later he calls her while she's wrestling with her brother, and her brother picks up the phone while out of breath. And then SHE picks up the phone while out of breath, and tells him she's busy. And THEN her brother attacks her, and she says something like "don't attack me from behind!" while still on the phone, and it's HILARIOUS, because Robin totally thinks she's having sex!
After that whole debacle, Robin is acting cold to Joon, so she decides to dress all sexily, and tries to seduce him. When that doesn't work, she challenges him to a drinking contest, which she loses. Since she's all drunk, he brings her home. It's so cute, because he puts her head on his shoulder! And then she drunkenly kisses him, before passing out.
The morning after, she can't remember anything. One of her coworkers mentions that she swore at him (remember, "shut the fuck up!"), and she goes to apologize, saying that it shouldn't have happened, and that they should forget about it. Robin, of course, thinks she means the kiss. In the elevator, she suddenly remembers what happened!
They discuss their misunderstandings, and go out on a ferry for the day.
Everything is all happy and good until her ex shows up. Joon decides to take him back, despite feeling something for Robin.
However, after realizing how much of an ass her ex was, she dumps him, and runs into Robin on the street. They walk around together. Robin is obviously in love with Joon, and Joon is just starting to realize this.
But they can't be happy together yet! A girl from Robin's past shows up, and confronts Robin about Joon. Robin lies to her about Joon being nobody to him. But of course Joon hears it all.
Note: the pic is here for the pretty. Oh my, the pretty.
There's more story, about his grandfather, and how Joon is essential to him as an employee, and Japanese people, and stuff. But the IMPORTANT part is that they end up together. There's a cute part at the end where Robin visits Joon's family, and tells them that he loves Joon, but doesn't want to marry her yet (very American), and Joon's dad gets angry and throws a pillow at Robin's head!
I loved this movie SO MUCH. It was perfect after watching Miao Miao. I love happy endings in stories! One thing I DID NOT like in the movie was the portrayal of white people. Conscious or not, they were all kinda assholes. At one point, two white guys refer to Robin as a "yellow monkey". And the chick from Robin's past is a bit of a bitch (but that's probably just because she's a secondary girl). But she also weirdly refers to Joon as "Pocahontas", which makes NO SENSE to me. Is that supposed to be some weird (and obviously incorrect) dig at her race? I don't see any other reason why she'd call Joon that... It saddens me that Asians think white people are so racist. Sure, there are a lot of racists (I live in an area where there's a large Asian population (though mostly Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Indian), I tend to hear racist remarks towards Asians a lot), but it's not universal!
Plus, I have time. It's the weekend, and I NEVER do anything on Saturdays (actually, I sleep. A LOT)
But they can't be happy together yet! A girl from Robin's past shows up, and confronts Robin about Joon. Robin lies to her about Joon being nobody to him. But of course Joon hears it all.
Note: the pic is here for the pretty. Oh my, the pretty.
There's more story, about his grandfather, and how Joon is essential to him as an employee, and Japanese people, and stuff. But the IMPORTANT part is that they end up together. There's a cute part at the end where Robin visits Joon's family, and tells them that he loves Joon, but doesn't want to marry her yet (very American), and Joon's dad gets angry and throws a pillow at Robin's head!
I loved this movie SO MUCH. It was perfect after watching Miao Miao. I love happy endings in stories! One thing I DID NOT like in the movie was the portrayal of white people. Conscious or not, they were all kinda assholes. At one point, two white guys refer to Robin as a "yellow monkey". And the chick from Robin's past is a bit of a bitch (but that's probably just because she's a secondary girl). But she also weirdly refers to Joon as "Pocahontas", which makes NO SENSE to me. Is that supposed to be some weird (and obviously incorrect) dig at her race? I don't see any other reason why she'd call Joon that... It saddens me that Asians think white people are so racist. Sure, there are a lot of racists (I live in an area where there's a large Asian population (though mostly Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Indian), I tend to hear racist remarks towards Asians a lot), but it's not universal!
