It's well known to me that the Taiwanese aren't exactly fond of Koreans in general. I'm not sure why. All I know is that it's almost impossible to find anything Korean related there. (I've also read some articles about the perception of Koreans in Taiwan. Not generally good)

There are exceptions: They enjoy their kdramas (dubbed into Mandarin of course). They love Super Junior and SS501 (SuJu and SS501 are some of the few foreign bands that actively seek a market in Taiwan. They're acknowledging Taiwan as a major market share, and Taiwan appreciates that), but in general if something is Korean in Taiwan, it first came through Japan (Big Bang, Kim Jeong Hoon, DBSK...). We did find a very small Koreatown outside of Taipei one time, but it was mostly 阿姨 clothes (clothes suited to the 50+ woman).

Anyway, I was watching a drama/movie thing starring my one of my 183 Club boys (and one of my favorite actors), Ehlo Huang, and saw this awesome bit of awesome.

Oh yeah.

I want to start watching more twdramas though. I'm watching this one, and getting so nostalgic. I'm missing Taiwan more and more. Yesterday I found myself missing the constant hoards of scooters. Wtf? Who misses that?! But speaking of...

Taiwanese dramas often show the prettier side of Taiwan. But people, THAT is Taiwan, a random alley in Ximen that's lined with scooters and signs (oh God, I can ever see the "oven mitts" on the scooter handles! 我想你台北. 我也想摩托車. 真的!) A lot of Taipei isn't beautiful, but that's okay, because it's interesting and wonderful.

I thought I'd do a big ol' movie pimp / picspam post! I feel like it's been awhile, so yay!

Plus, I have time. It's the weekend, and I NEVER do anything on Saturdays (actually, I sleep. A LOT)

I have three movies to post about; Twenty Something Taipei, Miao Miao, and Seducing Mr. Perfect. My write ups contain MAJOR SPOILERS, so don't read if you don't want to know.

Also, I've been thinking of uploading Twenty Something Taipei. Anyone interested?

Only half an hour into Twenty Something Taipei, and I'm in love. The colors and the lights in the movie are quite good. It has some nice shots too.

But more than technicalities, I'm responding to the characters. It's hard to explain, since I'm only a bit into the movie, but I like them all.

And my girlcrush on Cheryl Yang is firmly in place. She's SO AWESOME.

The movie isn't really working in WMP Classic, so I'm using VLC, which for some reason screws up the quality. As such, my caps aren't great.

Another awesome thing; TST is a hkmovie, so you have the option of listening to it in Cantonese or Mandarin (though I'm PREEETY sure it was filmed in Mandarin. The two main actors are both Taiwanese. And I don't think Ehlo speaks Cantonese at all...) I chose Mandarin, of course. Cantonese confuses the hell out of me.

Random (mostly) unexplained picspam )

I'm probably going to go to sleep now, and finish the rest later.

Also, I STILL haven't watched BBF 23, 24, OR 25. So I won't be reading/commenting on posts about them until I do... God knows when. I haven't felt like watching stuff recently.

Yeah. It's weekly now.

What else I bought from YesAsia )

You know that when GD and TOP drop their solo albums (SOOOOON), I'm going to be ALL over that... And I've heard rumors, but is there going to be another Big Bang album this year? If so, it'll probably be a mini album, ne? Either way, I'd be totally excited.

ALSO, I might be going on a mini drama/blogging hiatus for a few days starting on the 24th/25th. Why? Because City of Glass, the last book in the Mortal Instruments trilogy is being released that day. And I will need to read it nonstop until it's finished. At which point I will become upset that there is no more to read. And then I will content myself with fanfic for a few days until the ennui wears off.

I've been a fan of Cassie's since I first read Draco Dormiens oh so many years ago (in the heyday of fabulous Harry Potter fanfic. Not that there isn't still a lot of good stuff, I just miss the old fics by Lori, AngieJ, Heidi, etc). I basically haven't stopped reading her stuff since 2001. I'm highly saddened that one of my favorite trilogies is coming to an end, but what can you do. At least I get to see if Jace and Clary are actually related (I'm betting not, but you never know).

I'm watching My Queen episode 9 without english subs. Surprisingly, I am able to understand a lot more than I thought I would (not that that's a LOT, per se, but it's something!) Yay Mandarin learnings!

I totally keep stopping the video to look up the Chinese characters...

I can't really understand what happened in this scenes, but Ethan totally just called Ehlo a "Mommy Boy" (yes, that is what the Chinese subtitles said... in english. Confused yet?)

And then he stole Ehlo's clothes.

Holy crap! I CAN READ THIS
Not that's it's a hard sentence, but whatever. ACCOMPLISHMENT!

It says "Do you love Shang Wu Shuang Jie" (Jie = older sister, respectful term)
Pinyin; "Nǐ ài Shàng Wú Shuāng Jiě le ma"

He answers by saying "I don't know", and while I can't READ it, I do understand it when I hear it; "Wǒ bù zhī dào". I'm thinking I should watch stuff without subs more often. I'm surprised how much Mandarin I know already.

For three days and eight episodes I have contained my intense, insane, amazingly love for this drama, but I cannot hold it anymore. I wanted to watch all of the released episodes before I commented. And I JUST finished them.

I am utterly in love with My Queen / Defeated Queen. I haven't been this excited about a drama in a long time. It's amazingly sweet, smart, funny, sexy, and just perfect. It's an adult drama. This one isn't catering to the teenagers.

Plus, it features probably the GREATEST HEROINE KNOWN TO DRAMA-KIND. Shan Wu Shuang (played by Cheryl Yang) is a goddess. She's amazing. She's tough, professional, dedicated, beautiful, rich, fearless, arrogant, and proud. At the same time she's delicate, sensitive, and self conscious. She's perfect. She's who I want to be when I grow up.

That's another important point. Wu Shuang is (almost) 33. Everyone treats her as an old hag. She's defiant, but obviously it gets to her. That's the major point between her and Lucas. Ethan plays Lucas, the love interest. He's 25. 8 years younger. Naturally she kinda flips out about being attracted to him. Lucas is great, he's the kind-hearted, too good to be true hero with the dark past. He's not an ass at all, he's understanding, gentle, thoughtful, and sweet.

The chemistry between Ethan and Cheryl is AMAZING. The OTP is to die for. They argue, they have meaningful talks, they smolder, they STARE at each other longingly. It's really good. Did I mention how amazingly hot Ethan is in this?

The other actors are great too. Another REALLY fun point; About 80% of the side characters are from Fated to Love You or Prince Turns to Frog. Which makes me think it's a J-star drama... I'm surprised they didn't make Qiao En star in it. She's only two years younger than Cheryl...

Another thing the drama has going for it; a GREAT OST. Fish Leong sings most of the songs, and her voice is intensely ethereal.

I first heard of this drama when I read that article on AF about current twdramas. It looked interesting, so I then researched it a bit. I was immediately interest because it was Ethan. And the age different hooked me. I started downloading it, but didn't watch it until I read what [livejournal.com profile] seven_trees thought of it. I watched the first episode, and knew immediately that it was going to be my new crack.

Rather random picspam )

So yes. THIS is my new drama, and I love it dearly. The next episode comes out this Sunday. I think it plays at the same time as Superstar Express. Thus SE being a ratings failure makes sense to me. In my opinion, My Queen is far better than SE (not that SE isn't amazing as well, just not as good, IMO of course). It's been at the top of the Taiwanese ratings charts for it's entire run. It's no real surprise, actually. It's really a great drama. Can't WAIT for Sunday!

And, for the record, I've already witnessed quite a bit of twdrama cliches. It has 6 so far, a respectable number;
Drinking/getting drunk (almost always the female lead)
Motorcycles
The setting is Taipei
Girls passing out all the time
Token shot of the 101
(This one earned bonus points. The first token shot was at night. The second token shot was the new years fireworks at the 101!)
The same scene being filmed from about 5 different angles
(This is the most prevalent. Not as bad at YY3+1, but still highly present)
