OMG awesome. Are those Hamburger Helper earrings I spy? This has made my day.
(
sn0tcat had informed me they're probably Mickey Mouse earrings. I do not care. Seriously, you show me a glove with red pants, I'm going to automatically assume it's the Hamburger Helper "Helping Hand"... despite the fact that the Helping Hand doesn't actually wear pants - the red part on him is the glove band. I kinda want a pair of Hamburger Helper earrings now. I wonder if anyone makes them...)

I was going to write a big ol' post about the blackface controversy, but I'm tired, and have to wake up in 4 hours for work, so no. I will say that I'm irritated that a lot of sites are banning the discussion of it. Really? I can see how it'd be upsetting and all, but not allowing people to express their opinions? Not good.

Date: 2010-07-24 06:11 am (UTC)Are there any sites allowing discussion of it? (Soompi?) It'd obviously cause a lot of wank, and I can understand why mods wouldn't want to deal with it, but jeez.. ignoring it won't make it go away.

Date: 2010-07-24 12:41 pm (UTC)I think soompi must be allowing it, but I haven't checked. Yes, a lot of wankage, but at the same time, it is a real issue, not just something out of nothing. To ban people for talking about it? Ridiculous.

Date: 2010-07-24 06:09 pm (UTC)ONTD has a thread on it and I read some of it, but...bleh. I worry that banning discussion of it will result in MBC never finding out that people are offended. I mean, they just tweeted a screen shot of it like 20 minutes ago.. And I don't know what the text said, but it seemed like a regular promo thing rather than, like, an apology..

Date: 2010-07-24 07:19 pm (UTC)I might talk about my opinions regarding it later, but not now - at work. I do think people are going at it wrong though. I wouldn't blame the people, or even the network. It's Korea. It's Asia. They're not hip to racial sensitivity, we all know that. They SHOULD be, but they're not, and it's a hell of a long way off.

Date: 2010-07-24 08:04 pm (UTC)I personally think it's being blown out of proportion - mostly because I think people have to realize, it's ASIA. They're not terribly racially sensitive. It's pretty well known. I don't think it was done to offend black people in any way, and I don't think they have malicious feelings towards black people. It's just cultural. That, of course, does not make it right, but like I said, we need to think about the culture instead of the specific person or the network.
