uisceros: (Coffee Princes)
It occurred to me last night that maybe I should start downloading some stuff to watch on vacation, instead of rewatching Coffee Prince over and over and over again. So I'm currently downloading Hotaru no Hikari.

For my vacation, I plan on finishing, starting, or continuing; Hotaru no Hikari, Hana Kimi (taiwanese), Corner with Love, Love Storm, Bullfighting, Meteor Garden 2, Love Scar, and Goong. I'm ambitious.

Today, while taking a shower, I almost lost my nose stud down the drain! That would have sucked. Not that I don't have extra, it's just this one is my favorite!

I'm still bummed by the lack of subs for singaporean dramas. Apparently fansubbing is illegal there, so yeah. There's such a proliferation of good media out there... it makes me angry that I can't understand all languages (yes, I am literally angry that I don't know every language). I need a babel fish...

I haven't really studied Mandarin the past week. I've been too exhausted. Since my obsession with coffee prince, I've been listening to a lot of Korean recently. I'm still hella confused by it. It sounds like a more confusing japanese to me. The thing is, it's PRETTY. It's such a lovely sounding language (to me at least!). It's weirdly soothing, like Italian, or French. I love Mandarin, but it's not very pretty. German isn't terribly pretty either (neither is English, for that matter). But whatever, they're awesome languages!

*sigh* Am tired.
uisceros: (Hana Kimi Cast)
I'm about a week late on this, but I finally watched the Hana Kimi special! It was so cute! Hana Kimi was the second drama I watched, and it's still one of my favorites ever. The special was adorable, though I would have liked to see more of the Sano/Mizuki relationship. But the opening part with Nakatsu was too cute for words! I LOVE Toma-kun!! And Umeda's blue contacts STILL freak me out. Also, Julia's wig kept bothering me... I tend to fixate on wigs and weaves in dramas. I see them ALL THE TIME in twdramas...

I spent most of today rewatching Coffee Prince (when I really like something, I rewatch/reread it several times... I've watched HYD like, 5 times already), and working. I've been downloading some of the Coffee Prince OST, which is the best OST I've ever heard. The music is phenominal! (I didn't work on the massive coffee prince post this weekend (I had a test in my grad class), but I probably will at work...) Oh! And I caught the BEST Meteor Garden/HYD reference EVER in Coffee Prince, and don't know why I didn't notice it before!

I also did some Mandarin studying! I made some flashcards, but the program I use only had simplified, so I then had to translate the flashcards into traditional. It was time consuming, but good, since I got some practice in! Though, honestly, as much as I want to learn traditional, simplified does seem a lot... well... simpler (...duh right?).

When I was watching the Hana Kimi special, whenever there was kanji I recognized, I totally read it in Mandarin... (which is understandable, since I only know how to read two kanji in japanese (愛 and 犬... kinda random, huh?)).

And I'm exhausted! Sleep now!

Oh, and every single time I hear this song (너를 사랑해) I get all squishy inside. I swear, BEST SCENE EVER in a drama. EVER.
uisceros: (Junpei Toma-kun)
A coworker is totally talking on the phone in Mandarin (REALLY LOUDLY... she's like, pretty far away from me, but I can hear her VERY clearly...), and I can totally understand bits and pieces of what she's saying (I've heard her say 我知道 several times, and at one point she was saying numbers, and I recognized 八... and other stuff too)! Yay for overhearing random Mandarin!

EDIT: And now another one of my coworkers is talking on the phone in Korean. (I cannot understand her.... Korean confuses me very much). It's like the east asian section of the UN!

In other news, Coffee Prince is STILL blowing my mind. It's like, the cutest thing ever! I'm getting all girly, and squealing (interally, I AM at work), and like, walking around with a stupid grin on my face because I'm thinking of something cute from the show. Dramas kill me. I love them sooo much.

I AM still watching Corner with Love, it's just taking a little hiatus to make room for Coffee Prince. I'll finish it next week, or I might take it on vacation with me! I got to a lull in the story, and got distracted. Happens to me a lot. Incidentally why it took me like, 2 weeks to finish A Game About Love. Course sometimes the opposite happens, and I spend every waking moment watching dramas (when I first started watching HYD (my first drama) I didn't do ANYTHING but watch it, sleep, and work for like, a week. It was crazy).

*sigh* I wish coffee prince was longer... it's 17 episodes (I'm on ep 13), and I totally don't want it to end!

Note: I am totally going to obsess over Gong Yoo now...
uisceros: (Domyoji Dango)
My drama break is almost over! I'm going to work on the summary for the third episode of Love Contract sometime this weekend. Unfortunately I also have a test next week (I have a week to complete it), so I might have to postpone stuff, but yeah!

Even though I've started watching Corner with Love, I'm going to be watching it seriously soon. In my drama break, I managed to watch the Harry Potter 5 movie (which I've been wanting to see for like, a year...) It was super good! I disliked the book (it's my least favorite out of them, though 7 comes in a close second), but I knew it would make a fabulous movie (the action scenes, and whatnot). So yeah. It was fun!

I've been spending a lot of time researching living and working and learning in Taiwan. My mandarin has progressed... not amazingly or anything, but I do know around 22 characters (meaning I can recognize them, write them in traditional, know their meaning, and know how to pronounce them (and write them in pinyin)). I can recognize (and know the meaning of, and how to pronounce) a bunch more. I also have characters I see all the time, but either don't know how to pronounce, or don't know the meaning of. I'm proud of myself! 22 is better than nothing!

I can say short, basic things in Mandarin. Like, "hello", "how are you", "goodbye", "thank you", "I'm sorry", "okay", "no", "yes", "I don't know", "haven't", "good luck", etc. In sentences, I can recognize words... it's weird to think that 4 months ago I had no clue how to say ANYTHING in chinese... and now I understand some stuff!

Though I haven't finished the first episode of Corner with Love, I have to say, 大S is freaking gorgeous in this drama! I mean, she was always pretty, but in her previous dramas, she was always made to look plain and a little mousey. This is the first drama I've seen her in where she's all made up all the time, and in pretty dresses (which I want so badly! Her wardrobe is fabulous in the first episode, at least!). And I kinda hate her, because despite being 31 in the drama, she looks like she's barely 20!
uisceros: (Rui!)
BTW, I TOTALLY love my Chinese word processor! It's like, the best thing ever. I never knew such things existed. I can type in pinyin or english. Granted, I get all confused, and type pinyin when I should type english, etc. I've already figured out a few things that have been bothering me... AND it lets me use traditional, which is monumental for me.

I've also been practicing writing hanzi, and I've gotten better! Yays!

Now it's time for me to sleep!
uisceros: (Zai Zai)
Several things;

- I've been MIA for awhile due to my recent obsession with A Game About Love. I ADORE it (but then, don't I adore everything?!). It's so sweet, and lovely, and friendship-ey! Qiao En is really good in this role. Her character, Duo Li, is sweet and sincere. More like Xin Yi from Fated to Love You, than her characters in Prince Turns to Frog, or Ying Ye 3+1. Sam and Xun Jie are great too! Their friendship is portrayed so well. And both are fantastically adorable and hot in the drama. Yu Qiao, who plays Qiao En's sister in the drama, kinda annoys me though. I think it's her voice.

- Randomly speaking of Fated to Love You, I read somewhere that there is probably going to be a sequel! Sequels are rare (the only ones I know of are the Meteor Garden sequels, and They Kiss Again (sequel to ISWAK)), but it's not terribly surprising, considering FtLY is the #1 twdrama ever. I guess they originally were going to do a period piece, but then decided against it. That would have been awesome though!

- Haven't started my Love Contract project yet, but I will soon (maybe even tonight!). I've actually been taking notes to start my NEXT project... but that one is still a bit away.

- I just read about a kdrama called Love Story in Harvard that I so want to watch now! How could I NOT... I mean, it takes place in HARVARD. It's be so freaking awesome to watch an asian drama where the setting is a place I see EVERY DAY (yes, I see Harvard everyday... it's on my way to work, and very hard to miss).

- I've become more sure that my plan to study Mandarin in Taiwan is the right thing for me. It's still a ways away, so I have plenty of time to reconsider. Plus, one of the community colleges near me offers Chinese... so I might sign up for a beginners class. And apparently they don't teach hanzi in the class, which is good, since they'd probably teach simplified anyway. So this way, I can learn some basics, and then I'll be slightly prepared for Taiwan. Also, I want to learn in Taiwan specifically because they teach traditional hanzi. Right now, more than anything, I want to do Chinese studies (in particular, Taiwanese studies).

- It's also really annoying learning mandarin in simplified, and then having to translate it into traditional via my trust dictionary. Stupid simplified!

- Lastly, found a car today! Very possible that I will buy it. It's cheap, and looks nice. So yeah!

uisceros: (Ah Ken x Xiao Feng)
Through the magic of the internet, I have found a subbed, direct download for A Game About Love!! SQUEEES!!! (watched first episode, super cute!) The torrent wasn't doing anything for me, so yays! I'm happy! Now, if only I could find Seventh Grade....

Am exhausted tonight, so I'll be going to sleep... very soon.

Mandarin learning is coming along fine. I'm focusing more on written stuff now, rather than spoken (since I probably wouldn't be able to self teach myself anyway). I have Monday off (thank God, ne?), so I'll work on the Love Contract project over the weekend. And possibly friday night. But for now, I'm too tired to even think...
uisceros: (Qi Yue)
I FINALLY found the first part of jiā yóu!!
It's the same character that is used in the title for Ying Ye 3 Jia 1!!

加油!! So exciting!
uisceros: (Xin Yi x Cun Xi)
I just want to voice my irritation that Taiwanese dramas tend to get the shaft when it comes to subbing. So few prior to 2007 have been subbed. It's kinda annoying when I want to watch an older drama (Marry Me, Goku Dou High School, In Love With a Rich Girl, Engagement for Love, Express Boy, Say Yes Enterprise, Legend of Speed, Scent of Love, Come to My Place, and a ton more!).

I am EXTREMELY appreciative to the sub groups who take on taiwanese dramas. There are so few of them (I'd say around 10). I wish I could read Chinese/understand Mandarin so I could watch the ones that haven't been subbed.

That was my purpose for learning Mandarin in the first place, but I've discovered I REALLY like the language. And I'm fascinated with Taiwanese culture! Who knew?!

I bought more Mandarin learning stuffs today. One is a set of flashcards. Thing is, I honestly have no idea if they're in simplified or traditional.... I wasn't even sure they were in Mandarin until I saw that they had pinyin on them (Cantonese has a different romanization system). I hate it when books/other learning materials don't identify which dialect they're in. Sure, anyone who has even begun looking up Chinese can differentiate between Cantonese and Mandarin, but if you haven't, you're screwed, because most books just say "Chinese".... as if all Chinese people speak ONE language.

The other thing I bought is a study guide sheet thing. It definitely uses simplified, but I figure I could use it mainly for the pinyin.

I also bought a small book to practice my hanzi in. Yay!

OMG honey and clover totally rocks my world. Seriously. Toma-kun continues to wear the awesome Boston Univsersity sweatshirt (squee!!), and in the last episode his friends uncovered his large porn stash! So cute!

I was practicing my Mandarin tones last night, and I seem to have finally gotten the fourth tone (descending), but now I'm having trouble with the second tone (rising). Whenever I pronounce it, it sounds like the third tone (wiki calls it the "dipping tone")... So yeah. Tonal issues abound.

(Randomly, on the wiki page for Mandarin, it has some sample phrases, and one of them is; "How much will it cost to get to Munich?" (Dào Mùníhēi xūyào duōshǎo qián?).... odd. Also odd, but for some reason, other than english, the foreign language I hear spoken the most in dramas is german. It's weird, and funny... last episode of Honey and Clover a character spoke german. And I totally understood what he said! Dao Ming Si spoke german in Meteor Garden too... granted he wasn't any good at it, but whatever.)

I feel like doing nothing today. I'm so damn tired, and just sick of work. I'm so sick of work it's not even funny.
uisceros: (Default)
Awwww! I finished Prince Turns to Frog! It was sooo cute! No wonder it was so popular (2nd highest rated Twdrama EVER!!!)

Now, Bull Fighting. Hopefully the subs get finished fairly soon, else we'll have a situation like Wish to See You Again, or They Kiss Again. I'm also downloading Hachimitsu to Clover, so now I won't have an excuse to watch more twdramas. Plus, Ikuta Toma-kun!! Squee! Ever since Hana Kimi, I've adored him! I love Jiro Wang, but Toma-kun makes the best Nakatsu ever. EVERRRRR!

Randomly speaking of Hana Kimi, I should totally get on watching the taiwanese Hana Kimi. I liked the tw-version of HYD (well, I liked Meteor Garden 1... still angry at MG 2)! I wonder if I'd like Itazura na Kiss...

Started Goong. Korean sounds like a mish mash of japanese and chinese. It's messing with my head, man. Must. No. Let. It. Ruin. My. Mandarin. Learning!! It does have a nice sounds to it though. I like Mandarin better, but it isn't as pretty.

Meh! Now with the Korean messing with me, all I want to watch is stuff in Mandarin! I LOVE Mandarin! I WILL become fluent! I LOVE Taiwan! I LOVE hot Taiwanese boys! I must repeat this to myself periodically. Granted, the Korean boys are pretty hot too. But they're probably younger than me. I hate that. They're not younger than me... Damn... now I'll like them even more.

你好 - nǐ hǎo -> hello

I'm rewatching bits of Meteor Garden... I forgot just how much I like Jerry Yan! He's so cute! His teeth are REALLY nice.

And episodes 17 and 18! Way to kill me with the romance!

And I'm rambling again. Alas.
uisceros: (Default)
I'm not desperate yet, but I AM craving spoilers. I sooo want to watch the last episode of Prince Turns to Frog... or at least read some summaries, but I promised myself I wouldn't, and damn it, I'm sticking to it!

Prince Turns to Frog is super super cute! I'm not as frantic about it as I was with Wish to See You Again, but I chalk that up to two factors; exhaustion, and PTtF doesn't have Zai Zai in it (though Ming Dao is plenty hot!).

I also have such a girl crush on Joe Chen! She's super super cute, and I just loved her in Fated to Love You, and I love her in PTtF! I want to be her! She's so pretty! I also want to be Michelle Chen, Ariel Lin, Barbie Xu, and Rainie Yang. And Terri Kwan, because she's just beautiful. As much as I so want to be a Taiwanese actress (more than I want to be an american actress), I would totally settle for being the token white girl. Seriously. As much as I've given up on the whole acting dream, it's still there. It never really goes away. It's what I've wanted to do my entire life. There was an article in the Boston Globe awhile back about a girl from Newton (town nearby) who became an actress in China (mainland). That would be awesome to do. Except, you know, Taiwan.... not mainland.

Oh, randomly speaking of mainland, I really want to go to Shanghai. It looks amazingly awesome and beautiful.

My mandarin is coming along... Random: Xiao and Qiao are pronounced pretty similarly. Obviously they have different sounds ("sh" vs "ch"), but when said fast they sound almost the same.

Also random: when I don't eat with chopsticks, I feel sad. I'm so used to them now. I think I hold mine in a weird american way, because all the Taiwanese hold theirs differently. Obviously I did not learn the Chinese method... though watching videos now, the Chinese method seems easier to do that what I'm currently doing. Granted, all my chopsticks are japanese style, which makes them shorter and more tapered... and harder to hold in the chinese style.

I want to find a good Chinese store. They have them in Boston, but meh, Boston.

EDIT: Random F4/JVKV related squee; OMG SQUEEEEEE!!! And I'm done. For now.
uisceros: (Default)
Random ass note on Prince Turns to Frog

What's with the weird hair dying going on here?! Joe Chen has blonde streaks (they're actually pretty well done! They're true blond, not orange), and one of the other female characters has a HORRID dye job. It looks like it was bleached (it's kinda orangey, the equivalent of blonde on really dark hair), which is fine, since the orange/brown color is actually kinda nice, but then she has really bad roots, like not just an inch or so, which is in style, and forgivable, but like, 3 or 4 inches of dark hair, and then bleached hair. It's weird looking.

I also learned the correct pronounciation of 小 verses 宵. Oddly enough, 小 is a third tone word, but whenever I hear it pronounced it sounds like a first tone word... And 宵, which I thought was a third tone, is actually a first tone. It's confusing.

Oh! I watched Bones last night. And I was TOTALLY unused to watching white people on TV. They kinda looked strange to me, like too elongated. And hearing english on tv is always weird. I watch so much asian tv, that Mandarin seems normal to me now.
uisceros: (Default)
So I "finished" Wish to See You Again (not actually finished it, only finished the subbed parts. Now I have to wait for the rest of the subs to come out). I'm actually pretty damn satisfied with the drama. It's a lovely story that deal with friendship and loss, and well as the romance factor. The acting is great, and it's just a sweet, sweet story.

I started Prince Turns to Frog last night. I wasn't immediately impressed, but I chalk that up to just having watched WtSYA, which was produced VERY nicely. Seriously, little to no background noise at all. The newer shows (like, the past year) are of wicked better quality than shows from even three years ago. It's weird. Anyway, PTtF is from 2005 (I think) so it's not as pretty, but whatev, I'll like it anyway.

It's funny though, because Ming Dao reminds me a lot of Ethan Ruan.... and they're both in series with Joe Chen.

Today I have a half day at work. I have to go for my eye appointment today, to see if I can get the lasik.

Oh, and apparently I forgot to mention that I'm getting chemical peels. I got my first one yesterday. It was mild, and barely stung. And while there isn't a HUGE DRASTIC change (as apparently everyone was expecting but me), it did work pretty well. My skin is a ton smoother, and looks better. I go for my next one in two weeks.

I took my meds last night, and while I didn't even take the full dose (I'm on really high doses of meds... apparently I don't respond well to low doses), I'm still weirdly wired... like I'm on drugs (which I am, but you get my point). I think my pupils are dialated. People are going to think I'm hopped up on something (again, I am, but you get the point).

Randomly, while I'm watching dramas, I'll catch something they say, and have to look it up immediately. Mmmm hanzi.
uisceros: (Default)
It's really wicked hard to find Taiwanese drama icons. Seriously. HARD. Taiwanese dramas/entertainment isn't as popular in America as Japanese entertainment is, so it kinda gets neglected. I'm actually surprised I've been able to find as many subbed dramas as I have, since Taiwanese drama seems to take a back seat to Japanese.

ANYWAY, new icons!! My current one is Zai Zai (仔仔 / zai zai), whom I ADORE! He's (他 / ta) so (所以 / suo yi) great (好 / hao? Doesn't seem like I should use it as such...) and cute (可愛了 ke ai le) in WtSYA. (I'm going to randomly be writing stuff in Chinese for awhile. I want to be able to recognize more characters. Sorry if it's annoying...)

WtSYA is great! I adore Zai Zai's (我愛仔仔 / wo ai zai zai) character a ton. I also love Kingone (我愛王傳一也了 / wo ai Wang Chuan Yi ye le) in it. He's (他 / ta) totally playing against type, which amuses me (我 / wo) greatly. Ken's (朱孝天 / Zhu Xiao Tian) character is cute (可愛 / ke ai) too, but he (他 / ta) hasn't been around much lately, so (所以 / suo yi) I (我 / wo) don't have as great of an opinion.

My understanding of Mandarin has really gotten a lot better recently. I can't (我不可 / wo bu ke) really put sentences together yet, BUT (但是 / dan shi) I can (我可 / wo ke) understand (懂 / dong) a lot more (更 / geng) words, and I can (我可 / wo ke) pronounce them pretty well.

Yay!

Drama/Anime List update 02Sep08 )

Random Mandarin stuff I want to remember;

吧 - ba -> polite suggestion particle
了 - le -> particle intensifying preceding clause
嗎 - ma -> question particle
沒有 - mei you -> haven't
甚麼 - shen me -> what
因為 - yin wei - > because
油 - you -> second part of ("jia you")
乾杯 - gan bei -> cheers
我不知道 - wo bu zhī dào -> I don't know
是 - shì -> yes
不 - bu -> no
不過 - bù guò -> but, however, only, etc
為什麼 / 為甚麼 - wèi shén me -> why, for what reason
總經理 - zǒng jīng lǐ -> GM
海豚 - hǎi tún -> dolphin
相信 - xiāng xìn -> believe
小姐 - xiǎo jie -> miss (young lady)

I've recently been having and interesting experience.

Basically I've been learning Mandarin though various sources, but mostly the dramas. But a lot of times I memorize or remember words/phrases in Mandarin, but forget what they mean in english. But at various times I'll randomly mumble them in a situation that seems appropriate.... It's odd.

Also, I FINALLY found the characters for "okay"/"alright"... it took me forever, for some reason. 好了 (hǎo le, it's kinda pronounced like "holla", except with tones... so it's hard to describe accurately). 了 is actually a particle, like 嗎. Yay for random Mandarin grammar learnings!

I'm close to the end of Fated to Love You (I just finished ep 19/24... so I have eps 20 and 21 downloaded, and I can get the rest off youtube). But, luckily, I started (and finished...) downloading Wish to See You Again, so now I have all the raws, and 11/16 of the subs for them.

I'm also still downloading MG2, because I WILL eventually watch it. I'm still angry at it now though. Maybe after Wish to See You Again, when I'll want to see another Zai Zai drama.

Though I've had difficulties finding some dramas, I've never come across one I wan't able to get in some form. I think the hardest was/is Goong, since it won't freaking download! I've been downloading it for like, several weeks now, and it's STILL at 95.7%! I could always buy it, but meh. Maybe I can find the missing pieces from youtube or something. Meteor Garden 1 was also difficult to find. And I can't, for the life of me, find Marmalade Boy in decent quality (the one I have is HORRIBLE). ANNNNNND I'm exhausted. Seriously exhausted. I'm going to sleep now!
